Permaculture Week in the Yarra Valley 2021

Held 20th March to 28th March 2021

Permaculture Week is being held on the lands of the Wurundjeri people and the groups collaborating to organise the events wish to acknowledge them as Traditional Owners. We would also like to pay our respects to their Elders, past and present, and Aboriginal Elders of other communities who may attend Permaculture Week events.

We would also like to acknowledge that we are in a Climate Crisis.  We work towards carbon sequestration via composting, bio-char and other methods.  We thank those campaigners and activists, farmers and industrious folk working tirelessly towards a better scenario for this planet.

Calendar of Events

Please note that each event and venue has a Covid-19 plan and limits on the number of attendees. Please book in advance where possible.

Permaculture Property Tour

Mount Evelyn

The property is a ‘suburban block’ in Mt Evelyn approx .75 acres, west facing, steep slope, lots of trees.

The buildings are being retrofitted to be more energy efficient and transitioned from gas to wood for heating as well as exploring cooling strategies that use plants and air flow to exit warm air.

A warm air trap in winter will surround the home. This is all work in progress as using second hand goods makes for slow progress.

Outdoors, again a work in progress. There is a design plan and some zone 1 and 2 food garden beds in use.

The flow of water is still to be designed, the property is on a slope with neighbours both sides and a walking trail at the rear, uphill. Several water tanks are in use but there is hope of creating a dry creek for water to run through in wet weather. Possibly a natural spring if it can be located.

The rest of the land design will commence soon when the weather cools including a Food forest and native bush foods at the front of the property.

Chickens, bees and aquatic life are included in the design.

Numbers limited to 15 people

Address details will be provided at time of booking.

Permaculture Property Tour

When choosing to downsize from a 5 acre property to an urban block Ann and Murray used the questionnaire at the back of the ‘Retrosuburbia’ book as a yard stick.

This property scored highly for various reasons.

It was established, so no new housing had to be built. There were good options for solar and retrofitting insulation and double glazing and enough room to establish food gardens including wicking beds, dwarf root stock fruit trees and an Aquaponics set up.

After a couple of years they are pleased with the zoning on the block and how it has developed.  They even have room for a few lovely roses.

Numbers limited to 12 people

Address details will be provided at time of booking.

Soul Dance – Body Ecology

Arts Centre Warburton

To link in to the Permaculture week celebrations, the March Soul Dance will explore dancing our connectedness to both our inner and our outer ecologies. Maya will introduce the topic with some guided meditations on our bodily interbeing with all other life forms, as well as the story of humans as a complex cooperation between trillions of cells and other forms of microbial life. This will lead into an evocative set of music to bring these stories of connection into our lived experience. All welcome, no dance experience needed.
